  3. UVCS has determined that protons and the more massive oxygen and magnesium particles are hotter than the electrons 
  4. in the outflowing coronal gas near the Sun. It has discovered remarkably broad spectral widths of oxygen and 
  5. magnesium emissions in polar coronal holes demonstrating intense preferential heating of these ions in the region 
  6. where the highest speed wind originates. The analysis showed anisotropic velocity distributions and very rapid 
  7. acceleration with oxygen outflow speeds twice those of the protons. The only known explanation for this preferential 
  8. heating and acceleration is absorption form high frequency magnetohydrodynamic waves.
